You must complete both of these components before applying to renew your licence. You only need to complete one Legal Update course during your two year licence term. Managing brokers who hold a secondary licence only need to complete Legal Update during the two year term of their primary licence.
RECBC’s Legal Update course is a mandatory continuing education requirement for all real estate professionals.
The Legal Update Course has two parts: a self-paced online component followed by a full-day classroom session. Real estate professionals must successfully complete the online component before attending the classroom session.
Which Legal Update should I take?
Note: You only need to take one Legal Update Course during your two year licence term. If you are licensed for more than one service category (Strata, Rental and/or Trading), you are only required to take Legal Update once during your licence term.
All licensed real estate professionals are required to complete the Ethics for the Real Estate Professional course. Whether you are a representative, an associate broker or a managing broker and whether you provide trading services, rental property management services, or strata management services, you’ll learn valuable information about ethical decision making in real estate in this new course.
The Ethics for the Real Estate Professional Course has two parts: a self-paced online component followed by a virtual classroom session. Real estate professionals must successfully complete the self-paced component before attending the virtual classroom session.
Completion of the course is required in order to renew your licence beginning October 1, 2020.

Your Real Estate Licence Number is assigned to you by the Real Estate Council of British Columbia (RECBC). You can look up your Licence Number using RECBC's online Licensee Search.
When you enter your Licence Number in the field, you will be shown the full name associated with the Licence Number according to the Real Estate Council of BC. If you think the name shown is in error, please either double-check that the Licence Number you entered is correct, or contact RECBC.
If your licence number is not found, and you are certain that the number you entered is correct, you can continue with the licence number you entered. Fill in your first and last name in the provided fields. Please be aware that if you choose to enroll in a course with a licence number that can't be found, your enrollment request may be subject to additional scrutiny.
Please select your primary Real Estate Board and enter your Board membership number. This will help determine the classroom components for which you are eligible to enrol, and will help your member board in tracking your completion of Legal Update.
The Membership ID (or member board number) is the unique identifier that has been assigned to you by your Real Estate Board. The name of this number varies from Board to Board. Here are some examples:
If you are not a member of any board, please select "NONE" from the Real Estate Board list.
The Legal Update course consists of two (2) components: an online component hosted by UBC, Sauder School of Business, Real Estate Division, and a classroom or online component hosted by RECBC and external providers. The online sessions are accessed through the internet, and as such, do not vary in location, and are the same regardless of your location. The selection of classroom session(s) that will be available to you is determined by your location selection.
Please note that the frequency and number of classroom sessions offered may vary from location to location.
The online portion of the Legal Update course is hosted by the University of British Columbia (UBC). A UBC Student Number is required to take any course at UBC. To retrieve your UBC Student Number you can use the Real Estate Division's Student Number Retrieval site, or you can contact the University of British Columbia, Sauder School of Business (Real Estate Division).
If you do not have a UBC Student Number, leave this field blank, and you will be assigned a new UBC Student Number.
The University of British Columbia uses your date of birth as the password for their online course system.
