Real estate professionals who take the 2020 Legal Update course will learn key concepts related to contracts, agency and conflicts of interest. You will understand how real estate ownership, due diligence and land title matters, and tax considerations affect the professional services you provide to clients. The topic of First Nations land is also highlighted in the online component of the course.
Legal Update is part of the mandatory continuing education that real estate professionals must complete in order to maintain their licence. The course format consists of two parts: a preparatory online component followed by a one-day classroom component. You can expect to complete online assessments and participate in classroom activities that are created to develop skills for your day-to-day practice.
The 2020 version of Legal Update introduces greater flexibility by allowing you to tailor your online learning experience through an element called Adventures that relates concepts to a particular practice area. In addition, managing brokers will find flagged content to consider from their perspective.
You only need to take one Legal Update Course during your licensing period. If you are licensed for more than one service category (Strata, Rental and/or Trading), you are only required to take Legal Update once.
The residential course is intended for licensees who primarily deal with residential transactions, and the commercial course is customized for those who specialize in commercial properties.

The Legal Update course consists of two (2) components: an online component hosted by UBC, Sauder School of Business, Real Estate Division, and a classroom component hosted by real estate boards and external providers. The online sessions are accessed through the internet, and as such, do not vary in location, and are the same regardless of your primary Real Estate Board selection. The selection of classroom session(s) that will be available to you is determined by your Real Estate Board selection.

The online portion of the Legal Update course is hosted by the University of British Columbia (UBC). A UBC Student Number is required to take any course at UBC. To retrieve your UBC Student Number you can use the Real Estate Division's Student Number Retrieval site, or you can contact the University of British Columbia, Sauder School of Business (Real Estate Division).
If you do not have a UBC Student Number, leave this field blank, and you will be assigned a new UBC Student Number.
